I've been wanting to try this for a long time, and this week I finally did it.

Cool hey? I think it's really neat, and I figured it was about time I tried something totally new. And it was really easy!

Things I used:
1. Camera with a manual setting (I used my DSLR)
2. Tripod (or other stable, level surface to place the camera)
3. Light source (flashlight is the obvious choice, but leaves lots of room for creativity)
How I did it:
I set my camera's shutter to stay open for as long as possible - 30 seconds was the max. I selected a fairly large aperture as well, F/4.0, as the flashlight was a tiny little halogen bulb, and I wasn't sure how bright the light was (this took some tweaking to make sure my shot wasn't under/overexposed). I pressed the shutter, and "painted" with the flashlight. I tried a couple patterns and shapes, but mostly just randomly doodled. How does it work? By keeping the shutter open for a long period of time, your camera's sensor is "seeing" all of that light and it's movement.
My flashlight had a strobe-like setting, so I tried that and got this:

Tried writing my name with our big ol' utility flashlight. (Bumped the aperture down to F/6.3)

Don't ask about this one. Haha!

Hi. I'm Melissa.
Welcome to my humble abode on the interweb!
I'm a wife and stay-at-home mom. My life is not exactly thrilling, but it is my life. And I choose to love it. Every day.
My dream is to become a professional photographer (one day...), but for now, I only aspire to gain experience and learn learn LEARN.
I write about my life here and there, post things that catch my fancy, and random things that distract me.
I appreciate any and all feedback, I just want to improve on my fledgling photo skills, and on myself in general.
I hope you enjoy.
